Matters of Justice: Was Murdered, Seeking Retribution

Postby villainpony » Tue Apr 01, 2014 1:15 pm

Hello. I'm still starting out, and being murdered set me back a lot. I think this is where people used to post threads like this, if there is a better place, I'm sorry and I'll move the topic ASAP. I also understand that the exact circumstances of my situation aren't black and white, so let me explain.

Have been slowly working on my little encampment for a long time, but only been recently rushed to start completing a palisade. Halfway done with the palisade, I decided to go and venture around and I do, in fact, like to trespass on occasion. With the number of claims near me (it's very dense with claims that aren't even occupied anymore) it's somewhat necessary. The thievery skill isn't, but ya know... "Why not?" I thought. I also had ranging so I could see my scents, and scents of anything going on that I might want to take notice of. Well, there's an abandoned claim just North of my claim, and as I was passing by I noticed that there were a /lot/ of in-and-out trespassing. It appeared that whoever had been there was gone however, so I entered, and poked my head a few places. WHoever had been there first had also been doing this. I took a couple hides off a drying frame. Might've grabbed a high quality egg out of somewhere, I don't even remember. There was a lot of stuff however I didn't take (oh gosh, a cupboard full of q50-100 bone).

Shortly after, I realized that whoever had been coming and going from the claim was still there. I traveled-back-to-hearthfire in a panic because, ya know, I don't like to trust anyone I just bump into, and I /was/ trespassing. Well, went home, about ten minutes later the person showed up outside my claim. Called me a thief and said I would be killed, and all that nonsense. Okay, panicking more, but my palisade still wasn't done. I tried to hurry but things have to set. Eventually I left for bed, because real world and stuff. Signed on this morning, aaaaaaaand murdered. So yeah. That's my life story.

I understand if there are rangers and white-knights who feel "oh well you got what you deserved", even if I personally feel that a few minor grabs on abandoned land aren't worth the death sentence. If there's anyone who frowns on outright murder though in this situation, I am asking for retribution. I play the game to be peaceful and friendly and stuff, not to get curb stomped by judgmental jerks. I think the most valuable stuff I had was on my person at the time, and that's all gone. I made a little palisade box to keep my hearth fire in, so that if I was killed (and I was) my stuff wouldn't be accessible. Well, overnight all that's left of me was a skeleton, so... Gone. Now I think the most valuable thing I have left is freaking water. >.< If there /is/ some reward I can give though, by all means I'm happy to share whatever I have.

Thanks to anyone who takes interest. If you are willing to help me, I can send my coordinates on the big map in a private note. I /would/ post them here, but, I'm not fond of the idea of more people coming and raiding me. (Incidentally, I'm not convinced the one who killed me for trespass and thievery wasn't also the one who was already trespassing and thieving in my abandoned neighbor. That's just hypocritical grief if he was, ya know?) I will say that it is on the Eastern side of the -64, -64 zone.

Welcome to haven and hearth, where by anyone can kill you and most likely will kill you for little to no reason at all. Get a brickwall before you start stealing.

sorry to say, but you got what you deserved.
crimes are crimes, relativity is not the point. whatever you didnt take dont matter, whoever committing crimes before you did dont matter either, but your committing crimes even before you have any walls has only made you an easy prey for whoever did that to you. you have no excuses.

Hi,

I am also fond of looting abandoned places and whilst I don't view it as a crime either, I am fully aware that if I leave scents I am taking the risk of being tracked, raided or murdered, if any of those things were to happen I would know that however unjustified I may feel it is, it is still my own fault. If you are going to do it then imo you have to accept any consequences.

With the new feature of being able to destroy the claims after 30 days it really shouldn't even be necessary to leave any scents. I always check this first and if I'm able to destroy the claim then I can loot to my hearts content, lol.

Tbh, most abandoned places that are accessible are highly unlikely to have anything of value although on occasion I have found pearls, metals and recently some 248q+ carrots, :D - but on the whole, unless the claim is quite away from my base or the goods are too good to pass up, I just wait for the 30 days to be up. It goes by quicker than you think considering by the time you've discovered it in an abandoned state a large portion of that time will have already elapsed.

You may get someone who will be interested in helping you simply for the excitement factor, but really you should just learn to be patient or accept your fate. :)

Gosh, thank you for the down-to-earth and polite but also honest and forward response. After the other two I kind of was expecting an incoming storm of people who would've just, ya know, bashed until the thread got boring. I have accepted the consequences, and a few dozen curios from now, I'm sure I'll move on. But I can still dream of my murderer getting bootstomped a few times. I think I was posting largely just as a way to vent aggravation, though, if any murder-murderers /do/ come by, might still talk to them.

You did say something that caught my eye though... You can destroy a claim? How do you do that? I think I heard reference to it once or twice, but haven't exactly found a how-to manual for making it happen. I am literally surrounded by claims that aren't being used anymore; either the players have stopped coming around, or someone bashed in a wall and killed everyone. Being able to drop the claim would make things infinitely safer. Heck, if it weren't for the fear of raiders coming and breaking another wall, I'd even be inclined to move into some of these places with 5+ houses of just stuff laying around.

you can destroy it with vandalism i think. it requires the owner not logging in for 1 month. they are kinda hard to destroy

Hi again, - and thank you, but to be fair Tonky and Kaizo are really just saying the same thing, just with less words. :)

To destroy a claim, or to test if you are able, simply walk up to the claim stick, choose 'destroy' from your icons and right click the stick, if the claim has been abandoned for 30 days or more it can be destroyed but it does take a certain amount of strength and stamina. Someone else may be able to be more specific or you can try a search for it as I'm afraid I can't remember from the first time I was able to.

If the claim hasn't been abandoned that many days nothing will happen and your char will just stand there. The only scent you leave is trespassing from original entry, no vandalism scents, and as trespassing isn't a summon-able offense and doesn't last long it's not much to worry about.

Another point - if there are a lot of raided and abandoned places you may be better off just relocating, it may be an unsafe area and in any case it won't give you much space to expand and will also attract passers by who want to look at the ruins.

Good luck, whatever you decide. :)

Haha, that is exactly what I was thinking - there are very few active villages in that grid, and tons of raided and abandoned ones, it was also home to three other raiding groups, one of which is still semi active.
