A Plea for Moderation

Public forum isn't the place for such discussions in the first place, if there were any posts that broke the forum rules then by all means give a ban for that. Quite frankly no one here cares, this forum is mainly comprised of a bunch of degenerates shitting on each other and this is just another way for them to do that. If you truly cared about this situation you would go above and beyond the scope of forum/discord moderator, no one here gives a fuck so stop acting like we should.

It's a rly sad worldview to earnestly believe people care more about allegiances in a bideo game than somebody being an active pedophile. Misa should've been completely ostracized from the community, and my perspective would be the same if it were somebody from my own group.

TheServant/Misa has openly bragged how he had "intimate relations" with a girl who, while over the age of consent in Brazil, would be consider a minor in most (western) countries.

While I have to assume it was just an edgy, inconsiderate, and worst of all - unfunny joke, he hasn't made a statement that this is the case, insisting this would be "giving in to the cancel mob." Closest thing has been an attempt to backtrack/downplay with a statement that claimed said relation was just a "kiss."

Thus, my personal moderation stance on this matter:

1. I find it unproductive to have a thread dedicated to repeating the allegations in an endless cycle. Especially when that effort could've been instead spent on compiling all the evidence in a single concise resource*, which likely would've convinced most people (including me) to take a firm "anti-Misa stance."
2. Responding to Misa forum posts with "kys pedo" is not something I would personally censor.

*Snail TECHNICALLY provided me all the evidence all the way back in June, but this was kind of an equivalent of me dropping a trash can at the police station and tell them to dig it up. Analogue is maybe bit too unfair, I could've reasonably dug it all up, but Snail could've almost as reasonably made a single compilation under a single link. Back then I had no idea this thing even existed, he was the one with burden of proof.
1. I make relatively strong statements based on 6 Discord screenshots that were on top of the trash can.
2. Someone points out there's Imgur link(s) at the bottom of the can.
3. I make statements based on the facts I just became aware of.
4. I get called hypocrite/flip-flopper/whatever.

It's all fucked, at this point the people defending Misa are just making false claims without evidence about the people calling Misa out.

All the screenshots you are referring to are from some old faction discord that nobody uses anymore.

The official discord is being used for endless game discussions and community events and is fairly and consistently moderated.

For what its worth, it wasn't that "i decided to check the wiki", that is what Jorb linked in his forum rules post directly.

I, personally, am also from Europe and 'retard' is very much considered hate speech where I live which is why I also view it as such. There is however the obvious problem of myself being allowed to moderate 'as i see fit' but then that being contradicted by one of the devs. But even on the first sentence on the wikiquoting cambridge, does say "such as" as in, not an exhaustive list. I would still argue derogitave terms against mental aptitiude or disability would be hateful.

The problem here is that I personally would prefer to triple down and suggest people just shouldn't use that word in particular, however if Loftar wants to use it nonchalantly then clearly I can't enforce against people using it in the same vein as racism.

I haven't been on the forum much in the last year and have no particular opinion on Pills's moderation thus far, but to claim that calling someone 'retard' (or indeed any slur when uttered towards someone who is not part of the group the slur refers to) is ever 'hate speech' is simply absurd. You could consider it hateful and it tends to be toxic (though 'retard' is quite mild considering what gets posted on this forum), but hate speech has a much more specific definition even if there is no universal 'official' definition defining the exact details.

Simply put, hate speech is speech that incites hate, discrimination or other negative sentiment or action against a group.

• 'That guy is a retard' is not hate speech.
• 'Mentally retarded people shouldn't be allowed to vote' may be hate speech (a court would have to decide if it violates local hate speech laws).
• 'People with Down syndrome should be sterilized' is a clear example of hate speech, because despite the politically correct wording it clearly advocates discriminatory behavior.

Hate speech is not about hurting someone's feelings (no sane code of law forbids saying mean words), it's about potential harmful consequences the speech could bring. (In most jurisdictions it's an explicit exception to freedom of speech, being too dangerous for society to allow.) If it can't reasonably be argued to be intended to cause harm to the group in question, it's not hate speech.

(If you want to crack down on rude words, there's still "No excessive swearing" and "Don't be a blatantly stupid/unfunny troll" you can use instead, I don't care. Just don't stretch the definition of 'hate speech' to the point where it no longer means anything.)
