Yea, not being able to connect to the Steam server with our Seatribe accounts will really suck. I feel like a lot of the old players will refrain from buying hats/higher than bronze sub for the Steam server in hopes that you may one day allow Seatribe accounts to connect.

Well, one thing I was hoping to accomplish was just simplicity, in that if you launch via Steam, you get to the Steam server(s), and if you launch via the website, you get to the non-Steam server. No at-login server selection dialogs (where new players don't even realize what the difference is) or anything like that.

We'll be considering our options, though.

It's funny you mention simplicity, because that has always been havens downfall.

I dont think ive ever seen a single person streaming haven for the first time that wasn't utterly lost on what to do. They usually wander around for a couple hours, then get frustrated and log off forever. If you don't see this as a problem, then you are a fool.

The early game quests are not good enough. They need their hand held firmly up until they have a claim, curio's in the study, leather in a tanning tub, and a house.
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

please allow for us lunatics, who have to play with 3 chars at once, some way to multi box without having to do this

Will the world size be larger to account for the influx of steam players?

why dont you just make W16 the new long-term server and S1 the short-term server?
release both at the same time, and let clients connect to either freely

see Path of Exile's Standard world vs Challenge world, or Oldschool Runescape's Main world vs Fresh start worlds

Please do feel free to enlighten me (a Steam noob) about what Early Access actually means, and why it would be good for Haven. Basically, to qualify for Early Access, Steam wants us to answer a couple of questions, and the nature of those questions made me think that Early Access was not for Haven, but, again, please do enlighten me.

For the sake of discussion, these are the questions that Steam asks of Early Access games:
  • Why Early Access?
  • Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
  • How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version? (It is best to talk about additions, features, and overall scope you would like to achieve, but do not make specific promises about future events (e.g. when the game will be finished, that the game will be finished, or that planned future additions will definitely happen).)
  • What is the current state of the Early Access version?
  • How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?
Bascially, they make it seem to me that Early Access is a public beta-test with a particular, well-defined scope, and given that Haven is in Eternal Alpha, I'm not sure what that well-defined scope would be.

loftar, i dont know if you are aware but steam can allow you to integrate with their market, it too hard to completely remove RMT from a game, but you can profit with it and make it more convenient for player, you can make cosmetic items like hats tradable on steam market and get something like 10% on every transaction

I'm no expert on this, but I believe steam will market games differently depending on early access vs full release.

If early access gives any kind of advantage, I say haven should use every advantage it can get.

It's mostly just useful for marketing. Users tend to be more forgiving for issues with EA games. In addition, it lets game developers have a second release when they think the game is in a better state to attract players.

Steam doesn't seem very strict about the EA label, many games have been in EA for 10+ years. Games usually leave EA whenever the game devs feel a second marketing push is worthwhile.

The case could be made that a goal is producing a permanent world, and prior to that the game could be considered early access. Or just this experimental short world and steam integration announcement. I don't think coming up with a list of desirable development goals would be difficult. I doubt steam actually holds you to completing every listed goal, or forces you to exit EA once you've met them.

Edit: The questionnaire you posted just seems to be user-facing for the store. You can filter the steam store by EA for some examples.

Steam is exceptionally lax on games being in EA, even for very extended periods of time.
I play a game called Caves of Qud, it released into EA on Steam in 2015. Guess what? It's still in EA. Granted it is coming out of EA very soon finally, but the point remains.
This game would fit perfectly fine into the EA category, and you wouldn't need to fret over it causing any issues.
