Even small veins can yield an interesting amount of ore, some days ago I mined a single tile that gave me >20 pieces before breaking (with mine song).

You spent XP which skews perspective and they can also yield zero I've dug out a 5 tile vein that yielded 10 ore and took forever because it's so hard to figure out where the vein actually is. I think I mined something silly like 40 tiles trying to find all the pieces.
