personally i'd be ok with them re-adding the claim power system but only on a really short, fast time scale to prevent situations like this. something like you can raid a village in 1 hour on its first day of life, 3 hours on its second, and on the third or fourth or fifth day they're fully protected like any other claim. So if you skip 1 or 2 days of playing and someone has set down a leave-and-forget troll claim you can potentially do something about it. (You'd probably also need to allow using wrecking balls on these semi-protected claims too) (also make wrecking balls dry in 1 hour, there's basically no abuse case for them anymore.)
I'd also suggest making it so you don't get to know if a claim is in a weakened state unless you bring a siege engine or wrecking ball up to it and test it. that way griefers have no way of destroying legit claims just by being fast enough, because they might have no idea its still weakened, they'd have to go to the trouble or drying a wball or lugging a siege engine over. meanwhile, if you skipped a day or two of play and log on to suddenly see a troll claim, you know can say for a fact "huh this claim is active but i've only been gone for uhhh 39 total hours so it's definitely in its weakened state, lemme throw down a wball".
