Probably so, it gave a bad first impression to a lot of people due to how it wasn't "properly warned about" and all that jazz.
Now I could sit here and call you guys "greedy", but the truth is it's also very unreasonable to expect to receive a quality game (or service for that matter) and not pay anything for it. IMO if I had the method to pay readily available I wouldn't mind paying for a subscription (college guy with no bank account/credit cards to my name and all that, but I'm fully aware this is my own problem and not the dev's).
If there is any sort of point to be made it's that the current payment model screws over people that don't have the ease of paying for virtual goods, and not necessarily just people that don't think the game isn't worth the money. If I had some form of magic machine that transfers the real life money I wouldn't bitch so much about stuff like this.
EDIT: To further on this post, is it possible that other, more "easy-to-access for anyone", alternative payment methods can be added? I know Xsolla might be a thing in the future, but to state an example Dofus is (or was, idk) a very popular game where I live. And people didn't mind the payment model of that game because you could pay for it by sending text messages through cellphone and getting charged that way.
