It's not the cupboards that are the issue, they're cheap and you have plenty of space to build more. It's the portable containers that limit what you can transport under various circumstances. Going from a Wooden Chest (6x6 = 36) to a Large Chest (6x8 = 48, so +12 capacity) costs you 2 hard metal, 4 leather, 3 bone glue and 2 rope. Upgrading from that to an Exquisite Chest (8x8 = 64, so +16 capacity) costs you 2 bars of precious metal and 2 silk cloth. It's expensive because portable container space is good. But instead of paying the materials, you can upgrade a Wooden Chest to 7x7 (49, +13 capacity, more than LC) for literally $5 (or $1.20 if you commit to further spending), or upgrade a Large Chest to 7x9 (63, +15 capacity, almost the same as Exquisite) for the same price; you can pay $5/$1.20 real-life cash to save 2 precious metal and 2 silk cloth. Of course, the very best portable container is the paid-upgrade Exquisite Chest at (81, +17 capacity) which can only be obtained by paying real-life cash in addition to the in-game materials.
Portable containers aren't as big of a deal as they were in the past, but this still feels wrong.
