This has been happening for me the last 3-4 days too. I'm on WinXP with a 2.0 Ghz single core CPU. Javaw.exe eats 160 MB of my RAM and 90% CPU, and everything in the background is incredibly slow (switching between chrome's tabs literally takes minutes and loaded Youtube videos pause every second).

It's the same way for me. My computer is ancient at about 8 years old, but I feel like this game shouldn't be that big a problem and yet it eats up all of my processing power and most all of my RAM. Again, shitty computer: 512 RDRAM, 1.5 gig P4 processor, RADEON X800 GT, but at least it can run, say, Morrowind well, which I consider to be a more demanding process.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?
This problem isn't getting any better, it's actually getting worse with every passing day. Now I can't even move around my mine (Where there are no trees or anything else) without getting choppy performance. How the hell am I supposed to play the game when I can barely move?

For other people with this problem, you don't happen to be running Vista OS's are you?

Sounds like you have a shittier computer than my 5 year old desktop XP at home. Onlyyyy 856mbs of RAM~

It's actually a little faster on my laptop, which is only dual core with 2G RAM and 512MB graphics card, which makes absolutely no sense at all. It has less than half the capability of my desktop.

Last week I could run H&H, delegate one core to Dwarf Fortress, have an IRC client, AND watch a youtube video on HD. Now I can't even run H&H by itself without it getting all choppy.

The problem isn't with RAM, it only takes ~400MB (Which is still ridiculous considering Oblivion needs less), but I've still got loads extra. There's something about the game that eats up insane amounts of processor power.

Edit: Another observation, when logging into the game, it starts at an acceptable 215MB of RAM, during which the game functions normally. After ~3 minutes, the game shoots up to 300MB and starts to turn choppy. It continues to increase as time passes. Perhaps it's the memory leak issue inherent to Java, except something is causing it to accelerate?

Anyone who has this problem should update to the newest version of java (Java 6 Update 16).

Solved my problem, sorta. At least it lags a bit less now.

lol, triple post.

Turn out the newer updates brought up some features that have compatability issues with Vista and Linux computers. I fixed it by downloading JavaWS ver 5.

Note: Downgrading is usually a VERY BAD IDEA, since older versions usually have gaping security holes. So if you choose to do this, I recommend disabling the Java add-on that's installed on your browser and running H&H directly off the downloadable client.

I think this is a clue. I've turned off a change I did a few days ago, right before this started. Please see if it makes it better.

If it does, then the fault was with Sun's JNLP persistent data cache. I wanted to use it to cache minimap images, so that they didn't have to be loaded over HTTP every time they became visible. Not only should minimaps load faster, it would also lessen the burden on Apache, which is already stealing I/O cycles from the game server as it is. As it turns out, though, Sun's implementation of the caching service is slower than I could have possible imagined. How they've managed, I've got no idea; I can only presume that they suck. I've turned it off again, though, so I hope it's faster now.

(Note that it's a pure client-side change, so you'll need to make sure the client is up-to-date to see the changes)

Hmm, I seem to be experiencing this as well. The past few days, it doesn't appear to be lag as it doesn't affect anybody else. I have updated to the newest Java, is there anything else I can try? It is basically skipping frames, very choppy most of the time.

- I have emptied the cache, redownloaded and it remains. Wow, its very difficult to play right now. Definitely not lag, nobody else notices this.
