Ok, Bees for real

Postby Peter » Tue Oct 13, 2009 4:57 am

We know that beehives have some bizarre rule that nobody knows; that is, for some reason they all rapidly achieve 1-2 Q. What is this rule, so that I may begin grinding my hives back to proper working order?
We know that:

-It's not Q of nearby plants.
-It's not Q of the materials.
-It's not any particular skill level, as far as I can tell.
-It's not quality points. Right?
-It's not upkeep.

What is causing Haven Colony Collapse Disorder?
Surprise.

It was suggested that the quality of the bee products (honey and wax) is affected by how many plants the beehive pollinates and that if there are many beehives around a few plants, each hive can only pollinate a few of the plants, thus none of the hives can increase much in quality.

Try putting a single beehive in range of a large group of plants for a while and see if the Quality of the wax and honey goes up.

maybe the q decreases while the bees have too many TYPE of plants to pollinate... should try to have a large field for each plant and put a beehive in the center of each

You know I was gonna test a therory, Perhaps its the kind of plant...
See Wheat don't have any Flowers to Pollinate it (if it does tell me cause I don't think it does)
See Wheat is a Grain, they rapidly reproduce by dropping its seeds to the ground and letting the be scattered by birds, animals and wind. PERHAPS. Because of this Maybe Beehives need Flower plants to produce high qual honey and wax (seeing as the Wax is actually the by product of honey, or the other way round.)

Perhaps a Plot of Poppies are needed to develop the Hive Quality...

My current working theory is that you shouldn't empty your hives often. Basically, bees need honey too, and if they never have any the colony suffers. My guess at the maths is that it's average quantity of honey in the hive times 20 (so a full hive can get up to 100q) plus quality of the hive itself (ie building materials) divided by 2. I'll try leaving some hives full most of the time and report the results.

I'm pretty sure there's a bug with the beehives. I'll look into it.

On the other hand, there's some pretty great ideas here... Though wheat likes bees.
Say, the terrain around a hive could be considered; A hive surrounded by roads, empty plowed land, and dirt shouldn't be as effective as one amongst the grassy plains and a few wheat plants.

I guess I should mention that my hives have been unemptied for at least a week and they're still waxless.
Surprise.
