Are the contents of carts even saved?

Are the contents of carts even saved during a worldsave?

Twice now during a crash rollback, when the server came back up after a crash, my cart was empty, when it had at the time of the worldsave had containers or other objects in it - resulting in massive losses of items, leading me to suspect that cart contents aren't saved.

Your content is not lost. It's either still unharvested or located somewhere else before you moved it in the cart.

Not for certain, the game saves bits of the map at separate times, if you move something out of an area and then that area saves before a crash then it can be gone for good.

It's not unharvested. I harvested it something like a week ago, stored the seeds, transported them here in straw baskets in a cart, and they sat in those straw baskets at a temporary site for a couple days, until last night. Last night, I transported them in those same straw baskets in that same cart to a new location a few screens away, unloaded the baskets, plowed some fields, and planted the seeds at the new location.

Then the server crashed, rolled back, and the cart was at the new location, the baskets were at neither location, the seeds were entirely gone (having been in the baskets), the crops were not planted, and the fields had not even been plowed.

Both times that the crash rollback ate stuff, I checked everywhere the cart had been, everywhere the baskets and chests had been, and the seeds, etc. They were gone. Disappeared. As Dilbert once said, the token ring fell into the ethernet.

The contents of carts are definitely saved _at some point_ I know this because I've retrieved carts after a rollback and had contents intact.

I've read, and witnessed things that tend to make me believe that the map is indeed saved in segments rather than all at once (which is reasonable and sensible)

Your experience leads me to make an educated guess that the interior of the cart is treated as a separate area and therefore is not necessarily saved directly after the position of the cart is saved.

If we go with that assumption then it's possible that your cart exited an area, that area was successfully saved, your cart entered another area, that area was successfully saved, however it did NOT get around to saving the contents of the cart.
