No you're not right.

This is really annoying since Punchyork has been pillaged in the night of yesterday-today entirely, we've got no food, no moths, nothing.

We are facing the same problem. There seems to be no workaround..

Basically we made a huuuuge wall and it is totally useless because of this problem. We must break down a farm and buildings and make another huuuuuuge wall to protect ourselves now. Sigh.

Of course there's a workaround.

Shift build a new post just behind your wall to fill the gap.

Yes, you have to build a totally new post, but it works.

How does that work? We tried everything. We can't even build west of a cliff. The only thing that worked for us is to build north of a north-east facing corner.

How does it work? Not sure what you mean. By shift building, you place it off the grid a bit, but not enough to actually leave a gap someone can walk through. I've done myself, so I know it works.

ran into that to when trying to build a hearth safe and just gave up. Have you tried wrapping it around the west wall since your so close to the end of it?

We wanted to wrap until we figured out that "hold shift while building" trick. Basically you can put down 1 extra corner piece next to the gap.
