Lost boat I saw sitting in?!?

I got in my boat, went in the deep water a couple squares away and closed the client.
Logged in a couple hours later and lo! Me standing in the shallow water square where i got in my boat and no boat in sight! (and with 2 wooden chests inside )

...Don't boat disappear with us when we log out? If not... well I've been real lucky so far then

They do not, as far as I know. I try never to log out in a boat.
