Knowing they're in doesn't help if the reason you were closing the gate was so they couldn't KILL you.

No it doesn't, but if they got that close in the first place then you've effectively let them in.
It does help if you just suspect them of being a sneaky thief and don't want them in your village as you can knock them out, or eject them.
