KInsman Logged on but "... is not logged on"

I have a kinsman. The kin screen shows his icon in logged on form. I am given the options "Private chat", "End kinship" and "Invite to party". Invite to party works normally - for an AFK kinsman (he never joins). I can also bring up a private chat window. But when I type in that window, I get "... is not logged in".

I have reason to believe my kinsman is in fact deceased. How about a message that says so, or a change to the icon so he looks neither logged in nor offline? Also, a question - what happens when/if a deceased kinsman reincarnates, probably under a new name?
