Hard Leather used as an ingredient when making Hard Leather

If somehow metal/water/clay somehow beats hide quality by like a ton of points this would be a way to raise your leather quality, by using hardened leather in place of leather as the clay quality can raise it.

This meaning that instead of needing just water and boards (which yes eventually cascade to clay) you can now use clay directly much higher up in the formula as well as water to get better results.

And even if they did I don't like rehardening leather. It'd be like reforging metal bars to raise them to the anvil and hammer q, so you can just use q10 coal for smelting.

Leather recipes should call for "leather", "hardened leather" or "any leather". Hardened leather shouldn't work in recipes that specifically call for normal leather, and the hardened leather recipe itself should be one of those.

boards? clay? how the hell are you making hardened leather because i've just been boiling it in a cauldron with some wax.

boards referring to tanning tub q, clay referring to the possiblity of finding some ridiculous quality clay and using that to raise it's quality.
