this happened to me outside sodom... there is no other way other than teleporting. I was next to a huge city and no one heard me, so don't get your hopes high of someone hearing you in the middle of no where.

DaMaGe, this happened to me on day 1 with Shappeh. I got him to come back and pick me up in the boat we were in... Shortly after the server went down. Again.

Shappeh logged in at his HF (He failed to tell me this. Whoopie!), and I tried swimming to shore (Less than 6 tiles at 10 Cons, Full Stamina). The warning message killed me.
So it IS possible to get back to land if a boat is close enough to you, but you will probably need sombody to operate it.
