The new mining system is a vicious cycle. You either kill yourself trying to find metal to make supports to find metal, or you never bother with mining.
Might I suggest mine supports take something else, like possibly bone glue, or something else costly that doesn't take what you're trying to find to build. That would make a lot more sense. If I had to dish out leather for every support, I wouldn't be wastefully building them everywhere, but it would at least be fair.

I agree with using bone glue cause it seems there are not enough uses for it and it might actually get people to pick up bones when out hunting now.

It would have proven your point much better and also proven you really do understand how to fight people and not only how to slaughter helpless sheep.

I was attempting to understand cave mining, and had been struck on the head for 150 damage. Ouch! I healed it up, and went back in with a total SHP and HHP of around 190. I thought I was fine. Then, wham, dead. This time, I was just mining along the edge, hoping to find enough metal to put in supports. This was not to be. I'm dead again, and I just don't have the heart to rebuild. Loftar, Jorb, your game is wicked awesome, but this last death really took me out of it. I'm sorry.

Loftar, Jorb, if you read this, would you be willing (if possible) to tell me what *did* kill me? It happened so fast I didn't even really catchit. All I know is I went from lots of HP to no HP so fast I didn't even have a chance to understand why I was looking at the character selection screen.

:(

I wouldn't want to reveal too much, but it's certainly possible to probe for ore without having cave-ins. SpidersEverywhere's experience is not coincidental.

Just going out on a limb here, but it seems that the harder rocks contain ores? The softer ones have only stone, the step above them is higher q stone, the step above that would seem to be a metal, whether it's labelled properly now or not, iron ore.

I've only been doing this mining thing for a day now, so idk. Anyone know?

Seems pretty random to me. Sometimes I chip away at a spot forever and it's all stone, and then other times I clear one out in a few seconds. The ore veins just seems randomly placed and contain a random amount of ore/stone. Never seen one give above 10 ore however.

No spaces so far have had a stone above Q10.

I can directly contradict almost all you've said.

I found a vein that's supplied 13 ores so far, with more to come afaik.
I agree with the speed thing, but it might not be random as towards how long it takes to clear a spot, it relies on strength i think.
And the no stone above q10 is another case for me, i've found q18 stone, and made a very pretty q13 axe out of it.

I had a cave-in mining at the immediate wall before but only once as oppose to mining deep. I will see if avoiding mining adjacent walls help.

I know, and i hope you didn't take it as me being rude, i was trying to supply my own experience.
