Also, the 'zigzag' mining method you are describing, is a feature, not a bug. Jorb stated this once in another thread. It was designed as a method of exploratory prospecting, and of course, is a wonderful battle tactic. In this world in particular, as it is taking longer to build stats, and not all rock is easily mined through. You'll just have to wall in your most valuable areas.

ZOMG!! thankyou!!thankyou!!thankyou!!thankyou!!thankyou!!thankyou!!thankyou!!

I laughed soo hard at that runestone. The SA Dwarf Fortress game journal of "Boatmurdered" is probably one of the best things on the net in a lot of years.

i just clicked a link to this from another thread.

loftar: New hair styles? Really? Seeing how Jorb never gets off his lazy ass to draw some, I almost want to add them to the game proper.

I'm pretty sure loftar or jorb said somewhere that the zig zag mining thing isnt a bug.

Edit: I didnt read all the responses before posting this =p

It makes sense, you're leaving the cave to naturally support itself and you can't mine all the ore without building a support.

Pretty sure it isn't a bug, also it doesn't 100% prevent cave ins, it just reduces the chances of them and of course once there has been one they will be more likely if not removed. It is almost a necessity to be able to mine like this when you are searching for resources on the lower levels otherwise it would take forever building the mining supports.

As far as defences go the options are basically to defend over-ground or underground. Most people just put a wall around their mine hole on the surface so that if someone were to dig into the mine then they still wouldn't be able to walk into the town. You can build walls underground but only on mined tiles, so not directly under the mine hole.

The danger of relying on a underground wall is that you might neglect to do rounds of it and not notice a battering ram setting there... Personally i have a wall on the surface and another underground, the more layers of defence the better.

Loftar at one point said there was a way to
mine without cave-ins, he didn't say how to
do it seeing as it was rather early w4 and the
system was still a newborn.

If it hasn't already been said, yeah, this is
very much intended.
