"Passive mode" animals in combat will break objects though. I unwittedly lead a bear to break a hearthfire once in world 4.

Yes, I meant to imply that when I said that animals will begin charging again. My apologies if my statement was convoluted.

I know this is old, but my husband had this issue, but in a way that really seems buggy. I thought I'd add it here rather than start a new thread.

He attacked a deer. As the deer started to charge him, he ran for his boat. As the deer was still chasing him down he chose to avast his boat from a distance. Part way there he decided not to hop in and canceled the avast by giving another running direction click. He ran off to one side and the deer passed right by him and attacked the boat instead. It seemed as if when he chose to avast the deer considered him in the boat so that even when he changed his order the deer still thought he was in the boat.

Don't know if bug or not, but thought I'd add the info for players to test.

I've had a deer ignore me to destroy my boat before as well. I saw 4 deer, hopped out of my boat to shoot them because I have enough UA to tank a deer and I typically one-shot them with my sling, but I hit the deer for like 190 damage, and he runs past me, and destroys my boat and leaves my 2 LC's sitting atop the water. It was really strange. I wasn't even in my boat to begin with.

Must be a bug if they are intended to engage hearthlings, and instead go out of their way to grief them.

Not a bug, their pathing does not always lead them in straight lines. When presented with obstacles nearby they will sometimes hit that obstacle first, presumably to put them in a better position to fight multiple hearthlings.

But, if the boat is almost a screen away and they pass by the hearthling to go a screen to attack the boat?

If I'm to understand the situation correctly the deer wasn't running away. It tanked the damage and, as deer are wont to do, it healed itself. Now we have a deer that is in peace mode but that is still attempting to "attack" the player.

My guess would be that its ai kept it moving in a direction after it had engaged in travel and the normal limiters stopped it from just attacking the player again.
