cave entrance works as a "switch to TP" from overground (layer0) to the first cave level (layer1) - where the unmineable tiles are

as you can dig in front of cave entrances at overground it might explain why it's mineable when mapgenbugged to cave level (layer1)
(wouldn't make sense to mark tiles unmineable where you can't mine (overground) anyways i guess)

Oooh, so accually the system switched the cave entrance and exit making the overground unminable (if there were to be minable ground) and the cave layer minable as Jorbtar made the overworld minable assuming it doesn't matter anyway because there's no ore lol

I've seen caves entrances that led to nothing before, and i remember trying to mine my way through to the cave area near them and being told it doesn't work...so maybe Pain is right on this 1

and if hes not I'd love for OP to make an alt with a hf nearby and give me the hs so I can see it with my own eyes

I've also occasionally been able to mine within the entrance range if it's ore there instead of normal rock. So maybe that is what is happening.
