Ranged hunting is still easily abusable

Postby Danno » Fri Jan 14, 2011 10:44 am

Needless to say, people are still sling hunting the things that are supposed to be the hardest part of the game. Have one person aggro a fox or deer, have another build construction signs around it, have everyone get back to the boats, and sling away! The animals will be unable to destroy the construction signs because they are unable to determine a path towards the player, and they can't run away because they're trapped. I've also seen screenshots of people actually building the fence - that works, too, but I guess no one will do that after reading this post. People say bears aren't running, but I'm sure they'll come back for more with zero fighting spirit if you stand on dry land. That happened with a fox I was hunting. Boars? Well, they're as easy as ever. Sling it till it runs, then you can probably finish it with one or two punches since it has zero defense in its cowardly state.

Though the update focus here was said to be on balance, not combat... but I think it's worth some mention since it seems there were attempts at preventing cheap ranged combat.

I complained about this in a couple of threads but there's no point really, anyone who likes it will just keep abusing it and the people who don't like it have to do it to keep up.

Abusable? You have to up your marks to atleast 50 to be any good, thats 127,000 lp that could have gone to something else. Marks is awful late game btw :)

50?

No one is talking about being good. Get 5-10 MM and you can kill a bear, no problem.

I constantly hear about hunting *abuse* and such:

**Dude! They, like, just work in teams to lure and trap horrifying animals and then kill them from a safe distance!!!11!!!one!! Animals in H&H should be dire-GOD-mutants with power of distance-perma-death-kill forever! you should have to be a team of 10 people be in the maximum armor with BattleAxes and half gets killed to subdue a fox!**

Seriously. How is that an abuse to trap animals and then kill them? I guess when you guys go to the grocery store you push your buggy to the meat aisle, wrestle the steak to the ground, lose and arm and then pay at the cashier?

H&H is not final fantasy in which you kill rats until level 40 you know?

Please read over the original post while you're slinging that bear with your Q10 sling and wearing your shitty nettle clothing. Take your time though, he doesn't ever run away from you, nor does he possess the ability to kill you when you're out on the water.

My point exactly; does it matter in real life what you are wearing or using to kill something much bigger and fiercer than you once it's trapped?

I mean, you can be butt naked, dig a moderately large pit and then lure a freaking tiger or bear in it and just throw stones at it for a while and it'll be dead you know? Even without a sling :P

Your reasoning is that our dear cave ancestors should have discovered medieval plate armor before going out hunting right? And quite possibly used a sword to kill dear right?

Danno wrote bears are supposed to be the hardest part of the game... While I agree they are certainly the fiercest animal out there, who is he to say the strongest animal shouldn't be killable by a newbie? An organized newbie.

My reasoning is that this is a game and these animals, especially the bear, are supposed to be difficult to kill.

By the way, I don't think you understand the bug aspect of this thread. The so-called "traps" are supposed to now be broken by attacking or fleeing animals. Danno explained what the problem was, you just don't seem to have read it.

Indeed, the problem is that jorb/loftar don't want us to hunt like this. The proof is in the fact that animals can now break through construction signs. They're supposed to be more dangerous now and we aren't supposed to be able to trick them with dinky traps like that. However, we can still abuse construction signs to trap them as I explained.

I don't think animals need to be impossible to kill at all, no, sir. I'd much prefer if we could fight animals directly without it being suicide. Marksmanship/abuse has a clear advantage, though, so nobody would waste their HP/armour on that even if it was an option.

You realize we've killed several boars, bears, foxes, and even posted screenshots to brag about it, right? The world started 4 days ago and we've already done that. If a person can complete all the challenges of the game within a week, all that's left is months of grinding.
We've pretty much trumped the entire world by abusing ranged hunting - one person with 10 marksmanship and a q7 sling.
