1000 HHP damage from a boulder? Really?

Postby Morgant » Sun Jan 16, 2011 4:56 am

So yeah. I hopped back in to haven this time around, with the purpose of being a miner. I grinded up skills, found a nice little cave, and got started. I kept myself well healed, and got hit by one or two cave-ins. 50 HHP damage? That's fine. Sets me back a ways because of the leechhealing, but hey. I got to continue searching for metal. Well, while mining in my cave again, with allllllllmost enough exploration to see rustroots, I cause another collapse. That collapse did 1000 HHP damage to me, I had well over 50 max HP left, and it killed me, needless to say. Is this normal? Because if it is, it's ridiculous. Of course I didn't have mine supports, because I was searching for the metal to build said supports. Vicious cycle much?
If it's possible I'd like to be revived, but I know how rare of a thing that is.

1000 seems excessive, but you should not get revived.

They should not be able to make 1000 HHP damage. If anything, I imagine you might have been been hit by two at the same time, dealing 100 HHP damage. Are you sure you didn't just miss a digit?

I might have. Either way, I've lost all my progress, and considering my profession and the likelihood of this happening again, I don't think I'll be continuing this world. The new mining system is a vicious cycle. You either kill yourself trying to find metal to make supports to find metal, or you never bother with mining.
Might I suggest mine supports take something else, like possibly bone glue, or something else costly that doesn't take what you're trying to find to build. That would make a lot more sense. If I had to dish out leather for every support, I wouldn't be wastefully building them everywhere, but it would at least be fair.

new mining system owns, dude. it sucks that you didn't find a vein of ore but it sounds like you were just digging deeper in a place that only gave rock.

Actually, I was mining along the side of the cave. Trying to find a vein. If I had found one piece of metal, I could have made spectacles, and been able to finally find rustroot. Plaice seemed impossible to catch in my lake, and out of 50 WWWs none of them were carrots. So I had an overabundance of exploration, and 12 perception purely from boletes and luck. I guess what gets me is the number of precautions I went through to ensure I wouldn't die this world. Never left the cave without Xray on because of murderous boar and bears, never attempted hunting after a friend got torn apart by a lowly fox, and I always kept myself well healed. Then this. :<

It's anecdotal, but I've never gotten a cavein without mining out several contiguous squares. Mining a single tile and moving down the wall a bit has been safe so far, so I'm thinking that's the best way to look for metal. Unless it's all coincidence.

Look like armor/helmet dont help in protect from cave-in damage. This is confirmed?

Sarah Jane here,

I was attempting to understand cave mining, and had been struck on the head for 150 damage. Ouch! I healed it up, and went back in with a total SHP and HHP of around 190. I thought I was fine. Then, wham, dead. This time, I was just mining along the edge, hoping to find enough metal to put in supports. This was not to be. I'm dead again, and I just don't have the heart to rebuild. Loftar, Jorb, your game is wicked awesome, but this last death really took me out of it. I'm sorry.

Loftar, Jorb, if you read this, would you be willing (if possible) to tell me what *did* kill me? It happened so fast I didn't even really catchit. All I know is I went from lots of HP to no HP so fast I didn't even have a chance to understand why I was looking at the character selection screen.
it seems killing this sarah person will bring down the wrath of pande...which mean your following week goal will likely be making a ton of cone cows... -- niltrias
