What solutions are actually to solve the Java 1.6 problems?

Postby johnon » Sat Jan 22, 2011 6:09 am

I have the latest Java release. If I recall correctly, it's named something like Java 6 Build 23 or something. The game insta-crashes on startup. I've read around, and I've tried finding the work-arounds to fix the insta-crashing. However, I don't exactly know which ones are directed at this problem in particular. I'd try and go back to Java 1.5 or something like it, but I also don't know which "archive sites" are safe, and I don't want to cause problems with any other Java apps by doing so.

So, basically, what I'm asking is either for an explanation of the work-arounds suggested for the 1.6 problems specifically, or a safe site that has a Java 1.5 release on it.

Thanks.

I assume that because you're posting about rolling back your java version, that you've read this post. You should try to keep relevant issues together, and a simple post on this page would have sufficed.

As for archived java files, i would prefer not to provide any for liability issues on my part. I don't want to be responsible for your misstep in the downloading process.

This being said, apply the appropriate spyware and malicious software removal tools to this item, located here.

More than that, I was asking for a fix not involving a rollback, if one existed.

However, thanks for the help you have given.

This is supposedly not a known issue, and has no real solution, the only thing that i can see being solved is re-coding entire sections to comply with jws and the server so that 1.6 works for everybody. That said, it's pretty impractical, and a rollback is all that I can give without recoding the entire game.

Was Oracle not a 'safe site' to get 1.5 from?

It might have been, in fact i think i retrieved my copy from them, although i lost the link, and this is the best i could do on short notice.

If you google for Java 1.5, the first result is the JDK and the second is the J2SE, both from Oracle.

Typically the guys who make it are safer than guys who rehost it.

I uninstalled the Java 6 SDK and JRE, and installed the Java 1.5 JRE. I get the same result. Crashes on startup. Does the game just not work with 64-bit systems?

EDIT: 32-bit Java, Windows 7 64-bit. I had tried 64-bit Java 1.5, but I got a "Windows can't find the correct application to open this" message until switching to 32-bit again.

Clear your cache if you haven't tried already, the old files could still be looking for 1.6.

My game ran fine last night. This morning and all of today, it crashed on startup. I've rolled back java, reinstalled it, cleared cache... Everything, to no avail.
