Key no longer works for its own gate

After using a key, my friend put our key in a basket near our gate. Only half an hour later, the key no longer works for our gate. Why is this?

It was inside our palisade which has 1 gate and no holes in it. The basket was claimed and the gate shut. It was not labeled but is the only key we have access to.

Good chance that someone with permission on your claim has it and put a fake copy in there.

If he copied the key, the copy would work.

There is only one gate in the entire area that we can access. My friend was the only one on in our village and put the key in a basket for about 10 minutes, then picked it back up and tried using it half an hour later.

I honestly doubt that it is a fake key.
