loged out and the boat i was holding was gone when i loged back in

yep. thats what happens when you hold a boat when you log out. no way to get it back. remember not to do it again.

why is it when I log out with a boat in my hands, it just falls to the ground in some random direction?

Because it used to fall where you logged out, so if the server crashed or you got logged while lifting a boat, you couln't log back in from that point, which made expeditions through land very annoying.

Objects in hand don't disappear when you log out or crash, someone took the boat or it landed somewhere he couldn't see.
