Tracking and Foraging?

Hey, I was sailing around and wasn't sure if I had tracking on. So, pushed the button, and turned it off (of course). But I also noticed... Something disappeared from my screen. Figuring it was just my eyes, I turn on tracking again, and start sailing some more. Curious, I found a batch of 3 mussels, I turned tracking off, and two of them disappeared. I tried this several more times, and it seems mussels disappear when you turn it off, but don't reappear when it's on. Does tracking secretly give you some perception? Or simply a bug?
