Not sure if this was just a misunderstood sound... but,
I shift-clicked on my steel plate to go into my inventory and I heard the lp gaining sound. Like in acquiring a new item "naturally".
I don't think it was anyone of my curios because they stayed the same when I checked.
Edit: Also the soldier's helmet might have the same problem.
Didn't get any lp from my boar helmet, nettle things, and other items. Probably because I already acquired them.

Was the equipment items you made or someone else made? You'll get the discovery LP for the item if it is something you didn't make. (Assuming the item has disco LP associated with it.)

Bug already reported.
When you unequip stuff that you never discovered with SHIFT+Click then you get the discovery (if there is discovery associated).

Yup this is a known bug. You can confirm it yourself by shift-clicking your linen shirt and linen pants when you make a new character.
