I've discovered through trial and error that generally a character does not get discovery LP from something they otherwise would get it from, if they interact with ANYTHING in the interface after beginning the hourglass timer for interacting with an object that would give LP.
Example 1: After clicking "craft" on a Cone Cow for the first time, and then clicking through the menu for something else to create.
Example 2: After clicking "pickup" on a Blueberries for the first time, and then right clicking on a tree to bring up the dial menu (but not doing anything after that)
These are general examples of what I've experience, so I didn't specifically test these situations with these items, objects, etc. But this seems to be so true to the point if I know the character is going to get discovery LP when I start the process I don't touch my keyboard or mouse. So really right now it is more of an annoyance for the knowledgeable player, but for newbies that get impatient and like to queue actions (like myself) it can be a real detriment before they have a chance to get curiosities.
Edit: I believe this might also happen when picking up or crafting something if when obtained the item cannot fit in the player's inventory so it is under the cursor. Also note that in all of the cases the character does not earn the LP they are still noted as having discovered the item, so they cannot earn LP afterwards with the work-around method described above.
