Playing HnH on a newer computer

Postby kin » Wed Jul 20, 2011 9:08 pm

I recently got a new computer in the mail from Dell and replace it with my old one. This computer runs alot smoother and faster but doesn't run HnH as well and actually lags alot and FPS is really slow. The specifications of this computer are:

Inspiron 560
Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 450 @ 2.20 GHz
RAM: 2gb
64 bit operation system
Graphics: Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator

I was surprised that this computer didnt play HnH better than my old computer that I purchased 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure that the Graphics are fine for this game due to that it is not too demanding when it comes to graphics. But im not an expert in that field and would be pleased to have any help.

that graphics card actually might be a problem. first you should download new drivers for it from the manufacturer.

Not quite sure, but COULD be the "64 bit operation system " i had a 2gb Comp whit 32 bits , now i am using a 4gb 54 bits, and it was a surprise to me that the new one runs it whit very interesting lag spikes ( not from server) that i never hadp roblems whit on my old one, both had the video drivers to date, both used the same Graphic card ( it was to nice to just toss it around, and the new one SUCKED).

Well is there a way I could reduce the 64-bit to a 32-bit? Without buying a new computer....

Buying 32-bit Operating System or downloading one and installing it over the 64-bit will fix any problems you have with 64-bit.
Basically any 64-bit processor can also run 32-bit processor no problem but, not the other way around.
Don't think there are many disadvantages to using 32-bit OS with 64-bit processor too, so you should have no problems.

Well, the HnH client is A) in Java and thus B) requires graphics to run in OpenGL. Being in Java means that it's extremely processor intensive. If you new computer has a core clock speed slower than your old one (a very definite possibility given it's a Celeron), you could see a noticeably slower client. Also, modern video cards are designed to render 3D graphics. While the 2D ops don't get ignored, they may not be up to par. I haven't dug into the client code enough to know where the bottlenecks are, but my understanding is that it's not the most optimized code it could be. Those imbedded Intel GPUs are notorious for being crappy at speed and compatability.

There's a few, but nothing the current Intel OSes should even notice. Games and other RAM intensive software, on the other hand, might find a loss in performance because of the decreased memory space.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
