Blocking Claim

Postby ArthurDent » Sat Sep 10, 2011 1:07 am

There's a whole damn claim running from river to river, ad coordinates -55, -72, running for i dont know how much.. this should not be permitted at all.. it's useless and only blocking passage for people who wants to get around the world.. please do something about this

You can boat through it without any criminal acts turned on. You can enter it without any black skills either, just turn on criminal acts and you'll leave a benign scent of trespassing. People are at full liberty to own whatever they see fit to own. This is particularly true if it inconveniences others by guarding valuable spots or resources, acting as an economic or social factor.

We do this in real life a lot too.

I think I should not be obliged to do some criminal acts for such a thing.. however it's made just for annoying people and kill newbie actions. if there is a valuable resource, you could leave a free space up or down, and not go just over the river.. I dont know, im a newbie myself.. but I find this really ugly

you can't force summon with trespassing, if they kill you over that they was going to kill you anyways.

It's benign for a reason. The point of it could very well be to discourage you from landing on the shore and exploring in-land, as a defense mechanism. Also to protect curiosity spawns, forests, and such. Newbies are notorious for the destruction they leave on an environment.

And just because you find something annoying does not mean it's a bad game mechanic, broken, or evil. Stop and think about it for a moment and see if it makes sense or not. People have invested time and energy to protect Something. That's fair.

You can make the case that they should need to maintain it or have it fall into decay, that would also be fair. You could also make the case that you should be able to contest their claim, that would also be fair. There are lots of things that you could say which would be a fair and which you could make a case for; someone elses work being an inconvenience to you and therefore a broken mechanic in the game is not one of them. That's like saying "MAN, SOME ASSHOLES BUILT A CITY WHERE I WALK THROUGH THE WOODS. FUCK THEM DID THEY NOT KNOW THAT I WANTED TO WALK THERE? YOU SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO MAKE CITIES OR ENCLOSE AREAS IT'S ANNOYING."

Minus the fact that you can traverse through village claims without trespassing by the essence remains the same. It is, however, annoying to see giant tracts of personal claims of people that no longer play.

I think the biggest impact it would have is during a chase, a momentary stop in movement for the escapee would be enough for the chaser to kill.

I thought about it, and I still think it's a bad mechanic. It's not a city.. i walked (and run) for about 20 minutes and couldnt see one end of it (from north to south.. from east to west it's about 30 seconds walk)
I didnt think about the escaping thing, cliffs do the same and are pretty much natural.
The 'decay solution' seems pretty good to me, like everything else claims not maintened should decay after some time. I, for once, would limit the maximum space. If you want something THAT HUGE you divide it into more human pieces with some space between them.
I obviously cant be sure.. but that is not 'work' or something built for a reason other than 'ok, we block this way, f**k everyone' with no way to contest, destroy, decay it.
Sorry for opening this, but I thought this was a problem..

woot a $hite man - Vogons caught you again :P

some month ago i also thought those huge claims shouldn't exist...but the longer i play i see the need of those, and you might profit one day as you might trade for resources out of that claim you worry about now...

It's an LP bank. When you die you lose a big part of your LP even with full tradition, but declaiming gives a full refund so people store LP in claims so they can get it refunded and quickly bounce back after death. Yes, this is a shitty mechanic, but everyone seems to be opposed to changing it so that LP doesn't get refunded when you declaim.
