Deer attacking boat

Postby ImAwesome » Sun Nov 06, 2011 4:00 am

is it a bug, or do deer hate boats

heres what happened:

was killing a deer with my sling, it tried to run but I had it trapped with signs, I ran out of stones so I hop out of my boat to chip a few from the huge rock, deer goes beserk breaks signs, hes between me and my boat, I think I'm dead...but no he attacks my boat.

I can't get to my boat to move it out of the way because of the rock which was right at shore(not close enough to chip from water)...I take another shot(got 2 stones while chipping) deer ignores me and still goes for the boat, he sinks it I take another shot deer takes off running(he had the branch in the crossed sword circle thing before I ever got out of the boat)

this doesn't seem normal to me, and I've never heard of it happening before. didn't lose anything important(just an empty chest) so not complaining, but this is really one of those wtf moments for me...

no doubt off topic and no doubt the dickheads will have a field day, but here goes:

running down a bear once and had it turn around, run past me, and attack and destroy a runestone.

boar have chewed thru/attacked boats, fences, tanning tubs, and drying racks more than once when i didnt claim all my space properly in a camp and they spawned in there and i took exception to it

moral of the story: shit happens....its not a bug (more or less)....it's life in haven & hearth....next time be sure you are where you can get into your boat and run (no matter how badass you are, there is always someone/thing in this world even moreso)

don't think so?

some of the best beat down come from "farmers" working their fields....the uber players get a kick outta "puttering"...not all of em run around being one-hit killers on palisade walls (think of the quiet dude with the black belt who DOESNT have to prove anything)

ok seemed like a bug to me, even if not its still pretty weird that he would attack the boat and not me, but as I said didn't lose anything that mattered so no big deal

not off topic if you're explaining that its just a weird game mechanic

Yup, deer, bear, and boars tend to have a random chance of attacking any object nearby. That's why the signpost trick works when trying to shoot them from a boat. From what I can tell, they don't see the signposts as objects. Though if the signs are in the path to you, they'll tromp right through them.

And ther's no way to make change theyr mind. When they meet something to smash they MUST smash it, you can walk around theyr, you'll be totally ignored...XD

No refreshing target, sadly.

No. The way it works is that they have a small area infront of them that they begin to attack if the objects are obstructing their path to you. Having the boat so close by meant he viewed it as a possible obstruction and destroyed it. Fleeing animals will not break objects obstructing their path, which is why you can trap them. Charging animals will break objects which is why traditional sign traps no longer work. A deer or any animal that has healed itself will begin to charge at you again.

If you broke aggro, then they'll be aggressive. If you kept aggro then they'll remain passive but still be charging at you.

"Passive mode" animals in combat will break objects though. I unwittedly lead a bear to break a hearthfire once in world 4.
