Java cannot access due to socket error

Postby igott » Sun Nov 27, 2011 7:55 am

I remember playing this game about two years ago, and I liked it, so I decided to come back and start playing again, possibly getting my friends to play with me.

But I can't.
Whenever I open it, Java gives me an Application Error.

Simply put:
java.net.MalformedURLException: unknown protocol: socket

Anyone face this problem?
Anyone know the solution? I'm not entirely good with JavaScript.

Thanks

No one provides support for the default client. Go to the Wizards Tower and use a custom client instead. I'd advise Enders. Worst case scenario, if it still has bugs, there will at least be support for those bugs.

that is not true :( loftar helps us for the official client when he actually finds issues.

as for your issue, i am not really sure, i havent opened the official client the last few days, but i had no problems using it lately.
try reading some other threads in the wizard tower, you may find the solution, or wait till loftar actually finds you or maybe phades does.

I don't know, it looks like it's reading JavaScript, then again, somebody can say that it's ActionScript.
No matter.

Thanks guys, off to The Wizard Tower I go.

Thing is... if you're having some odd errors like this, there's a chance it's going to do it with any client. If you get the same error, follow up here as it's then something with your system or ISP.

FYI, JavaScript is a scripting language derived from Java, thus the name. The error codes read just like C++, too, which Java is derived from.

Some tricks to try when having issues, which will help with any Java program you try to run:

Make sure you're Java is up to date. The latest version is 7 with 6 still being supported (anything older may cause issues with some programs, but some older programs may not be fully compatible with 6 or 7).
Try clearing your Java cache out. That sometimes creates conflicts. (Java control panel, Internet options if I recall right.)
Try re-downloading the client.
In the case of connection errors, make sure to have your firewall, anti-virus, and other protection programs set up properly to allow Java to communicate with the rest of the Internet.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Most likely, you have some weird proxy settings. Check your Java control panel and set it to not using a proxy.
