OK I am not the most computer literate person in the world but I would think there are several steps to ensure that the client is safe to use. I'm probaly stating the obvious as well.
1. Check the codes.
2. If you are not computer/code savvy, have someone that is check the code.
3. If it is a publically shared client, be extra paranoid. These publically shared ones have the highest potential for codes that sends sensitive information to someone.
4. Run a test run with a "main". This being an account with some valuables but easily disposed.
5. If you are still paranoid of "haxxor" potential, just stick with Ender's. This is the safest option.

An enemy will only fight if he believes he either has a chance to win, or you've backed him into a corner and he's fighting for his life. A completely crushing victory provides an enemy with neither.
