Gate Key Disappeared

Building a house out here in the wilderness with my friend. We started putting palisades around the house for protection, and my friend finishes one of the 2 gates we are going to have and then leaves the key inside our house on the floor.. for several hours. I did not know she had left it there until she told me, at which time when i went looking for it and could not find it. She says she definitely left it on the middle of the floor but it's somehow not there. We first thought it was a bug, but have also considered the possibility someone came in a stole it, though we have not seen another soul for several hours and it seemed odd they would come in and take the key randomly with us hanging around nearby.

Is there some way we can get this key back from a GM or whatever (or just have the gate destroyed), or because of the possibility of theft you can't help us?

If you can't are we just going to have to build a new gate infront/behind the first one?

never leave anything on the floor or on the ground if you want to keep it... put it in a container or keep it in your inventory. sorry for your loss man. you might be able to get someone to break your gate down for you, but it'll probably cost a bit.
