they do work in general.

maybe someone was sleeping in it and you couldnt see him/her??

Nope, mine is the same. if you log off by sleeping in your bed, then make sure to log in from where you logged out. If you log in from hearth, you'll have a doppelganger asleep in your bed and that's the end of that bed - you can't do a thing with or to it.
