I vandalised my own claim

Today I was redesigning my stables to separate the cows from bulls. At one point I noticed I'm missing a cow. I turned on tracking, and lo and behold, there was a vandalism scent in the cow enclosure, right by the "gate" (an unbuilt tile of fence).

I collect the scent, get 1 use out of it, and when I track the hearth it points in my hearth's general direction. I collect again, go to the other side of my hearth, and it again points to it. I repeated this four or five times, tracking from different angles, and got the same results. The last time the scent disappeared while I was collecting it. It's worth noting that I don't even have the vandalism skill.

As for the cow, I found it wandering a couple of screens south of my farm, even though the cow fence had a palisade around it with a 5 tile clearance at minimum (towards south it's more like 15 tiles). This is the first time I had a cow teleport when I wasn't unleashing it, and it wasn't giving birth either (she had a calf yesterday). Does this mean my cows will wander off while I'm offline?

Was there a bull in the enclosure? If there isn't enough room for the mating animation to take place cows can be sent flying when it's attempted. I witnessed one cow teleport 30-40 tiles, totally off my claim.

I haven't built anything, IIRC. And even if it was from me operating the gate, why didn't I leave a scent on both sides? My exploration is higher than my stealth, I should've seen it if I was there.

And yeah, I had a bull in there, but I think that cow was already fertilized before. I didn't see it happen, but it's been there with the bull for several hours at least before it disappeared.
