germinated wheat without beermaking

Postby jlt314 » Sun Apr 11, 2010 11:58 am

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a (nasty) feature, and if this maybe better fits some FAQ or guide.
I've put some WWWs on a herbalist's table to dry, returned some 20h real time later and found a germinated wheat seed among other seeds. I assume that the WWW dried into a wheat seed, which then germinated. as I don't have the beermaking skill, I should not be able to place wheat seeds on the table to germinate.
if this is a bug, please fix - loosing wheat isn't exactly helpful for new players.
if that's a feature, please delete the thread (and maybe PM me to add this to the wiki, and maybe add a note to some FAQs and guides)

Hmm... Apparently, the wiki states that you need Beermaking to germinate wheat seeds, this is definitely a bug.

Technically that's correct, however, I believe in this case everything's working as intended.

You need the skill in order to place wheat seeds on a Herbalist Table to germinate them. But if a WWW becomes a Wheat seed and is left there, why shouldn't it germinate? The table doesn't have an assigned 'owner', except when checking if another player is allowed to interact/pick it up from claimed land, and thus it cannot know whether you have the skills necessary for wheat germination. It only checks your skills when you attempt to perform a certain action with it-- a WWW transforming into a wheat seed on the table has no user interaction involved, and thus no skills to check for.

Perhaps items should keep track of their owners if they're on claimed land, but then you would have to account for shared items in villages, kin allowances, etc. Alternatively, you could require that the seeds be picked up and then replaced in order to activate the next process if they haven't been interacted with by a player since their last 'action' (i.e. since they transformed).

Personally, I don't really see the point in going that far. So I'd call this a quirk, rather than a bug. :)

I actually thought of this potential outcome a few nights ago. Well, more quirk than serious bug :)

One possible hackish way to solve any newbie troubles would be to allow the planting of germinated seeds (or is this too far a stretch realistically?)

That would actually make sense.
