The case of the disappearing boat

I know, the titles sounds like a boat jacking, but I was sailing in my rowboat down a river when I stopped in the middle of it and quit for awhile.


A few hours later, I got back on and I was standing on the water, my boat was gone and everytime I tried to move I got "You need swimming to cross deep water" so I needed to travel back to my hearth fire.

Was the boat red? May have needed repairs, or someone who passed by killed it.
That is usually done to get obstacles off water.
