explain the subscription differences please J+L?

so, assuming i enjoy my first 48 hours of haven, i would probably subscribe, i was wondering, whats the difference between a months subscription, and buying a month of game time, apart from the price, are we directly paying for 720 hours of play time that will go on for as long as they last? or is it just a fancy way of trying to get more money out of us for the same amount of playtime as a monthly subscription? some info on how this stuff works would likely alleviate confusion for more than just myself
