Milder winters have let the (invasive) crayfish population grow and spread to new areas of the lake, further disrupting ecosystems. The Mazama newt (or Crater Lake newt), a subspecies found nowhere else in the world, has virtually disappeared. In addition to competing for the same invertebrate prey, the crayfish also capture newts in their pincers and devour the hapless amphibians alive.
