Confession of a Newbie

I've been playing nonstop for a week and a half now, I think, and I haven't killed a single thing by combat. Not a damned thing. :^( I haven't figured out how no matter how many combat guides I read. Is it actually straightforward and I'm just too dense to get it? If that's the case, then I may have a shot at some point.

This game is very fun, though. A+ for the creators. I bought a paper bag hat. It's very nice.

It's quite straightforward. You just got to have the stats to do it.
Begin by fighting ants, you only need 5 in unarmed combat.

I have 9 in combat, I just can't figure out how to actually... attack. I have the attack thing enabled, but it doesn't do anything to the other creature.
It probably has something to do with the little punch/jump/etc stuff.

It helps to use sidestep and quick dodge for ants. Keep both defences up at all times and you'll never take damage from ants.

The little pictures that pop up in combat are tied to keys 1-5 on your keyboard( in order from left to right). Press the corresponding key to use that move.

learn the lore 'will to power' then press 't' or click the little sword icon in the bottom right. if your mouse icon turned into a sword, you're almost there. now find some ants and click repeatedly as fast as you can in the path the ant is walking, this will initiate combat. clicking on the ant isn't always the best option as the ants are fairly quick and will move out of your clicking before you actually click it. it's annoying how much i miss clicking on the ant, just keep trying.

just use 1 of each move and keep your defenses up, defense is most important. with 9unarm skill you may have some difficulty but should be able to defeat one ant at a time, it'll be quicker once you learn to fight and maybe learn to 'kite' the ants

Combat moves are que'd using the 1-5 keys on your keyboard
Anything you have on your hotbars are overrided by combat

When in combat mode you'll have a list of 5 moves to choose from.
The moves go through 1-5 from left to right

Also, if you're starting on a new character, by default you have like 6 of each card in your deck for literally no fucking reason
Set them all to 1

Well, that didn't go well. LOL
I panicked in the middle of the fight and ran in circles because I was trying to remember which moves were defense.
I'll figure it out in-depth once I heal. At least I know how to initiate it/work the stuff properly now.

Blue icons are defense, red icons are offense. Then you have colored corners to differentiate yellow/red/green/blue damage/defense.

That video guide isnt very good, ants attack blue and green and there is absolutely no need to have more than 1 of any combat move active at a time, set everything to 1/5 (but dont use more than 5 moves).

if you keep up sidestep and quick dodge and kite the ants, you can beat them with 1ua, theres no need to take any damage at all like the guy in the video did.

Wounds in this game are a real pain in the ass, try not to get too many while learning the basics.

There's no need to panic vs ants they are slow as fuck, just set walk mode and kite properly (some ants are stupidly fast though, dont aggro those lol)

Ant hills are a great source of early game food and curios. If you're wondering what comes after ants it is probably bat (around 20ua needed), bats hit blue/green/yellow.

Just use a bow. You aim it at the bad guy and wait for the bar to charge when the bar is green, fire it!

The non-ranged combat is far too complicated to use as a newbie.
