Let's test this against a similar thing.

On one hand, what is animated pornography? Is it real sex, or just a simulation thereof?

If it's only for the sake of mental stimulus - i.e, masturbation or getting turned on - then it's basically real. Maybe even super-real (because it is more stimulating than real sex).
But if we're talking about the entirely of the sexual faculty, which is not only mental but also physical (and, unless you are a materialist, also spiritual), then obviously it is only simulated because it lacks any physical (and possibly any spiritual) reality. It's an illusion you can give your mind over to, but it has to work double/triple overtime to provide that illusion to the rest of you.

Maybe that's why pornography is so addictive.
