The previous universe ended much as ours will. Matter was scattered into islands amongst the vastness of infinity where it was mopped up by black holes. A very, very long time passed and these black holes grew further and further apart. Inevitably, one by one, the immense vacuum of infinite space overcame the integrity of these black holes and they were torn apart. The immense energy created by the pull of that vast vacuum allowed for a net gain of energy, from which all matter is made. Everything in our observable universe and beyond is likely the remnant of only one such explosion.
This cycle will occur again and again for eternity. Death and rebirth, new heavens and new earths. Despite the attempt of nothingness to overcome the creation of matter it cannot win.
How did it all start in the beginning? It's impossible for us to comprehend given just how limited our ability to observe our own environment is.

I believe he is trying to say that humanity is interested in interstellar travels and questions about the whole universe all the while 2/3 of our own planet's ocean depths are not explored yet.
