I would still suggest to build claim and palisade. Building something, even a fence gives you fraction of more protection than no fence.

I see so much of this, active bases all decaying from lack of a claim, when I explain it to them most of them aren't even aware they could claim it or think they don't need to if they have built a wall or believe the cost to be too high!

I also meet players who have built a pclaim but then have not known they have to study it to activate it.

The last lot I met got raided after I had told them to build a claim and they ignored my advice, they then moved a short distance and set up another base without claiming it, lol, there is just no helping some ppl.

I meant that build claim and them palisade. But if you are too lazy to build pali then build fence. Fence without lock doesnt help much but its better than no fence.
At very least it can give you some protection from animals, and because of visitor debuff it doesnt really matter if your fence is locked or not.

A claim is what keeps people away, I'd ram or bash your fence if you didn't have a claim, but if you had a claim and no fence, I'd still probably leave your stuff alone.

I'd have no reason to fear someone tracking me down without a claim, no scents means easy loot with no repercussions other than possibly physical resistance from a weaker character (not too much weaker than myself I might add, most of the stuff I found here is ~20q or lower)

Unless of course this is a warrior alt with horrible farming. lol

I wanted to say it would help during very very early game when noone has vandal but i forgot about aggroing animals to destroy fence so now i say that fences are useless if u use em as defence.

i remember dude refusing to kin me even thought i helped him chipping stone and brought him a boar and i told him i wont give him the boar since he doesnt want to kin me and i walked away a bit and he walked out of his pallisade and grabbed the boar anyway so i sprinted and stinged him
