Don't mess with trolls: A cautionary tale

Postby Boas » Mon Dec 19, 2016 1:56 pm

I had been told that trolls, upon appearing, will pose and flex for a little bit before they attack you, sometimes giving you enough time to flee.

Alas, it was not true.

Startled by its appearance, I made a foolish mistake, and accidentally blocked my own path with a single stone stockpile.

But this was not to be the only tragedy to befall me.

A friend came to try and avenge me. Armed with a bow, he fired at the monstrous beast.

My corpse was smashed to pieces as the troll stomped over it trying to reach its attacker, who was killed in the ensuing rockfall.

I imagine this may make it difficult to build a cairn, in addition to losing all the gear I had been wearing, now strewn about.

Let this be a lesson to all. Learn from my dire misfortune.

P.S. why aren't study desks inherited? lol

So, had you not blocked your path with the stockpile, could you have gotten away?

Also, sorry for your death. :(

And yes, study desks should be inherited.

I think I could have, yes... but only because the troll didn't outright kill me in the first couple hits. Combat initiated before I even saw the thing. I guess I was tough enough to take a wallop, but then I got stuck.

Right, so it did immediately initiate combat ... that was the bit I was unsure about ... I'm mining an awful lot atm and it does worry me, I sort of rely on the fact that I have a horse and will have a moment to flee, but obviously I can't count on that then. :(

Such a shame about the error when you had survived the first couple of hits, but easily done in a panic.

The big issue here wasn't so much the troll as much as it is jorb and loftar's weird logic to create an enemy that murders but doesn't fucking work properly.

Issue #1 is the reason it took some time to see the troll after it had actually appeared is because you never have the res for any image in your own folder until it has been downloaded from the res server to your computer as it appears.

Issue #2 is even though sometimes the troll can path to you it decides to throw rocks anyways because bad hitbox mechanics I guess or something.

Issue #3 is the fact that it didn't do the chest beating thing for any amount of time and aggrod you right away which should never be happening as far as I know if it worked correctly. Were you mining on a horse? That messes with that mechanic perhaps.

Issue #4 is that all of this is pointless when the troll turns out to be 100q

Issue #5 is fighting any troll or any lower than L1-L2 with close combat is a death sentence for most players and should the troll actually happen to be of decent quality, using bow and arrow just lowers it.

Oh right and issue #6 being that your poor body was smashed before you could retrieve it or it even decayed.

Loss of your corpse seems to be your own undoing, by aggroing the said troll over the corpse.
Otherwise, RIP, i did hear that mining on horses is more dangerous because somehow they skip the flexing stage and go straight to punching you.

They even break them just walking around though when they are in a peaceful state, it happens less often but they still do it if they are trying to path somewhere and the body gets in the way. I have a feeling they did this intentionally to prevent body blocking the troll with alts but it's also very stupid as players are losing out on getting their body back.

Boas some questions please:

1. were you on a horse?

2. would you mind telling us your con stat?

3. what level were you on?

4. How were you mining(I.E were you mining 1 tile paths or were you mining out entire swaths of area?)

I am sorry for you loss. was this an alt or a main? I feel now I Really should be making a mining thruway Alt.

So the lessons here are brace for almost instant death and do not try to hunt it in any way shape or form. Just let it despawn and hope for the best?
