Dev Appreciation Thread

Postby Jalpha » Thu Mar 09, 2017 1:43 am

Undergoing a period of self evaluation I realised how important positivity is to my ability to think creatively. At the same time I considered how I post on the forums and it became obvious that 90% of my posts are of me complaining about the game or challenging the life views of others and causing them cognitive dissonance. I don't think I'm the only one doing this.

It must be difficult sometimes, I thought to myself, to be able to nourish creativity when being constantly bombarded by the caustic written poetry of others.

To that end I have created the Dev Appreciation Thread; a thread reserved for positive comments and feedback for the devs, a haven amidst this tumultuous sea (cacophony if you will) of bickering and complaints. Feel free to contribute with whatever it is you enjoy about the game, features you feel were a step in the right direction or without which the game would lose its soul. Posts not in the spirit of the thread will not be tolerated and mod abuse will be encouraged in this respect (pretty much the only thread I have ever or will ever report posts in). You can repeat something someone else has posted, each post does not need to be unique, it just has to be about some thing or things you enjoy or like about Haven and Hearth. If you enjoy killing noobs, that's a valid contribution.

I'll start.

I like the constant looming threat of annihilation which hangs over my head almost every moment I spend in the game. I like the art style. I like how convoluted and complex the mechanics are and how they constantly challenge me to learn and adapt my playstyle. I like that the devs listen even if they don't always agree that I'm right. I like the way the game pushes boundaries.

I think kingdoms were a monumentous addition to the game and for the most part seem to have been implemented fairly well. I like the community, the good and the bad, and I like that even the worst of us have our moments where the polished metal beneath shines through the grime. I like that this place was made for us.

There are a lot of things I like about Haven and Hearth. I'm sure I will add more in time.

All the best for Jorbatar!
We love this game, I personally don't like all the cancer around it: customs clients, bots, exploits, etc....but unfortunatly everything works at this way, it would be great if at least in a game we could not have that shit, but it's not the case.

I'll feed this derail for a bit to try and understand why you feel listing features or elements of gameplay you think should be enhanced and/or retained is a bad thing. To be honest I think a circlejerk is a small price to pay for a list of things which make Hafen great.

devs are already jerked off enough for tons of good stuff they do so I don't think they need any more praise

constructive criticism is where it's at

Reported back! haha

Yea but brah, that's not how you do constructive criticism.

World of Roguecraft. That was constructive criticism.

Bad timing, everyone is frothing at the mouth today. I'm happy to let things run their course for now but I'll request a cleanup in time.

I'm pretty sure I know how to do constructive criticism - I send jorb an essay on most mechanics I dislike or want changed

So what exactly do you want to accomplish with this thread? Other than the jerks shitting on the devs every move they make, I'm sure they feel appreciated enough by people praising them every move they make.

If there's no constructive criticism, no interesting content, etc. in this thread, why post it?

Well if that's not clear from the OP then I'm not going to be able to explain it to you.

I'm kind of unsure where all this positivity you suppose they are receiving comes from or is but it certainly isn't here.

It seemed like a pretty clear thing to me but again this is just another example of how differently I view the world in general. From past experiences it's also apparent that there's no point trying to show others how and why I believe the things I do. That kind of stuff has to come from within. The allegory of the cave and all that.

Oh well I tried ;)
