Earth hour

Postby shubla » Sat Mar 25, 2017 8:16 am

What do you think about it?
I think its stupid event and it should not be held.
First of all, 1 hour of shutting down, some lights. It has absolutely zero impact on large scale.
Useless lights should be turned off ALL the time. Not only for 1 hour each year
Even turning down all lights for forever wouldnt help.

Even if its used to raise awareness. Im pretty sure that everyone already knows about climate change. And those who don't believe in it/know about it are too lazy or ignorant to find out more.

Instead, it makes people feel good. Giving them good reason to do stuff that is bad for environment, only because they shut few lights for an hour.

For once, I agree with you.
It's the kind of circle-jerk where people all post on their facebook "OH LOOKE VERYONE IM HEALPING SAVE THE WORLD TURN OFF UR LIGHTES LOL"
“We still, alas, cannot forestall it-
This dreadful ailment's heavy toll;
The spleen is what the English call it,
We call it simply, Russian soul.”

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

Lol all while passive aggressively shaming their friends for not participating

It's not like the big factories are powering down for an hour that day or anything lol
But nah, browsing reddit off of your laptop's battery charge is definitely helping

Here, let me turn off all the lights in my house, which are never on anyway because I dwell in the basement with a single LED light that uses approx 12W of electricity, which is significantly less than the computer I'm using to make this post... durrrr.

Congrats to whoever came up with this for trying to raise awareness in this age of short attention spans where a whole day is too long to focus, but the information is so thin and unuseful.

Want to contribute to saving the Earth? Things you CAN do that matter:

Set your thermostat for your house a couple degrees higher in summer, and a couple degrees lower in winter. It'll have 10x more impact.

Lobby your legislature to end daylight savings time. Interesting study from Indiana--when they decided to finally adopt it around 2006, it actually increased costs over the year by about 1%. (Google it if you want to know more.)

Improve the insulation in your home. Your wallet will thank you in the long run.

Don't live in northern climates. It's actually cheaper to cool your house in the terms of greenhouse gases than to heat it.

Have public transportation in your area? Use it. Or ride a bicycle instead of the car. A third option is to use a carpool. In large metro areas this is actually the ideal way of commuting due to traffic volume (well, not in LA where everyone has to drive everywhere for some reason), but in more moderate sized cities, at least in the US, nearly everyone drives their own vehicle and public transits usually suffer due to the decreased riders.

(I'll note that last one is moot because of the number of people we have here in other parts of the world where this is the standard thing, but public transit really does suck in most of the US and Canada.)
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

There's a reason it's called slacktivism.

People in USA are the issue. With them gone we would have so much less problems.

Or maybe just killurself.
If you are dead you can not consume natural resources.
But dont only kill yourself. Kill AS MANY people as you can, more you kill = more environment is saved!
--
if you want to tell how to reduce impact on environment, telling people to give up everything they have and move to africa in order to save on heating costs is just idiotic.

Improve the insulation in your home. Your wallet will thank you in the long run.

Do you want us to live in cold countries or not. decide already.

Set your thermostat for your house a couple degrees higher in summer, and a couple degrees lower in winter. It'll have 10x more impact.

Where did you get this number?

If you want to protect environment, you also have to start eating only plants.
Or at the very least, greatly decrease your consumption of meat.
But if you have to eat meat, eat chicken. Its still very bad for environment, but less bad than things like beef.

Recycling and sorting your waste is also essential. But Im pretty sure that everyone is doing this already, except maybe some poor countries in africa. Right?

You should also use genetically modified plants, as much less space is required to farm them. You should buy ones that are close to you, as transporting them around the globe costs lot of energy.

Saving things like water is also essential, as it takes lot of energy to to clean it. If you like to take showers sometimes, take less of them, shorter, with colder water.
Most water is used in products you use. For example, if you are wearing a shirt made of cotton, which is likely. You are wearing 2000 liters of water. Around 2000 liters of clean water was used to make that shirt. Its a lot of water.

Saving other things is important as well. If you buy new plastic bag each time you go to store. Its the most wasteful thing you can do. Think about how many plastic bags you buy in your life, now remember that there are 5 billion other people on this planet, what if they buy the same amount of plastic bags?

Shubla, your "improved" list is far inferior to MagicMan's, which was pretty solid.

3 of them are related to heating the house you live in. And one of these advices is very bad.
1 of them is related on public transit, which is just fucking obvious.

How is his list better than mine? Just because you feel like it?
People like you are the problem and should be get rid of.

Also what is the one on daylight saving time?
Daylight saving time saves energy. Going against it is going to make things worse for environment.

You must be either really really dumb or then just totally ignorant about anything related to climate change.

The original intent of daylight saving may be to save energy, but the effective seems to be rather minor. In contrast, there is a detrimental effect of our own body having to adjust the shift of hour in light of daylight saving; the lapse can create awareness based incident such as traffic accidents and work related accidents. Although from what I research, the shift in traffic accident is also minor, what is not minor are those that have seasonal affective disorder, bipolar disorder, or chronic sleep loss.

As for earth hour/minute/day/century, I just do what I can to be efficient with energy; I do not need an official hour to do so.

Daylight saving time kills hundreds of people each year, maybe even thousands.
But it has nothing to do with preventing climate change by removing it.
