The drivers doing that do get in some trouble for it I am sure, depending on the severity and the extent of injuries involved but from most of the videos I've seen it's only when the person in the vehicle feels threatened or their vehicle is physically assaulted/attempted to be broken into that they actually try to drive away and in the process they ram or run over protesters. If you want my blunt opinion I'd say don't be a traffic blocking moron in the first place but I do feel bad for the people that are usually injured or killed because it's usually not them who provoked the driver but a fewer number of more aggressive individuals that decided they wanted to beat on a car or beat on the person inside.
I'm not really sure what I would do if I were in the same situation but I do know for sure that being surrounded by any group of aggressive people is a scary experience regardless of the circumstances. But when it comes to vehicles it should be an easy thing to avoid, don't block traffic and don't start a fight with a person in 4 ton or heavier metal death machine.
Also I see nothing wrong with those times when someone is slowly pushing forward upon people that are deliberately blocking a vehicle. Get out of the way, don't cry that you're being assaulted when you're doing it on purpose.
