Which game should I start playing?

Postby Jizo » Wed Aug 23, 2017 11:20 am

I found this game genre first time now, open world sandbox rpg with perma death.
Haven and Hearth feels interesting so far.
Tried googling similar games and found Salem and Albion Online also.

I would like to waste my spare hours with one of these games. I would like to buy subscription to get a full experience.

Which game like this would you suggest I start playing? This? Albion Online? Salem? Or any else?
Which of these is the most polished and with most content?

Modded rimworld is awesome.
Survivalcraft too, but its voxel based.

Haven (this game) beats both by its graphics, UI and general polishing, but it loses its survival features quickly and isn't really permadeath at the moment.

Just came back from Albion after a few weeks there. Bugged overrated bullshit.

I'm generally interested in Albion given its seemingly more professional nature. What's good about it? What's less good about it?

Last time I attempted to try it, the Linux version crashed on me. Perhaps that has been fixed since.

Isn't Haven permadeath? How about items, do u lose them permanently? That's the actually the reason why I didn't started this game yet.

You can die, but it's really easy to avoid. The main way people died was PvP, but now you get sent home when you're ko'd (they'll probably take your items). The wounds you get are (usually) really easy to heal.

Yeah I agree that Albion for sure could have some features/ideas that haven could profit.
Unfortunatly I don't have that game, cause I already know i wouldn't like it, but if anyone of you guys has some experience with it, well, it would be nice if you can share your idea about good and bad feature in your opinion.

P.S. For the op, objectively I don't think there is any better game than Haven for the sandbox/crafting MMO RPG out there. Haven has the freedom that other games don't.

Items are lost forever once destroyed. Items lost in the water can often be fished out or found washed over in beaches.

And it really depends how you define permadeath. Dying in combat has become much rarer. And once you do die, your next character is able to inherit a significant percentage of the dead character's knowledge, as well as all its credos (classes) and land ownership.

I'd argue this point, but it really depends on your play style. Big village with lots of friends? Very little you can't heal up in a few days time. Playing solo or with only a few friends? Most wounds are easy to deal with, but some will take a few weeks. In that case, hit up a trading center and get what you need.

Nobody has said anything about Salem, and I'm not going to say anything negative. It's worth checking out, I think, but it couldn't hold my interests. Maybe it was just too much of a shift from Haven for me, or the mechanics felt "slow" in comparison (and Haven can be very slow). My one complaint was the reliance on the central town of the server. There's just not any one thing that I can put my finger on. I'll just note that it was originally developed by Seatribe with Paradox Interactive publishing it. It was dropped by Paradox, and then later sold to Mortal Moments.

Not sure I'd call them classes as you can do them all if you want, and they're more bonus than anything at a potentially steeper cost than just buying skills. When you say "classes" people think of something like WoW usually where you're locked into a subset of skills/abilities.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
