Better Off Ted: A 2 season comedy about a single father working for a very evil science company,
Veridian Dynamics. Supporting characters include his immediate boss played by Portia de Rossi (my favorite character), a whole team of weird research scientists, and more. This is up there for one of my favorites, it is very quotable. It isn't serious at all though, so don't expect that.
The Lost Room: A 3 episode (I think my version was broken into 6 episodes) "action, fantasy, mystery" I guess is what IMDB calls it, but I just like it for the world and rules it builds around the weird supernatural stuff that is going on. Good overall story too. Hard to describe it without taking away from being dropped into the world, like the main character is.
Death Valley: A series I think was on MTV of all places? It's basically COPS, if COPS took place in a world where monsters were real. Occasional zombie outbreaks, werewolf citizens required to self-quarantine, vampires. It was fun.
Jericho: Small town, midwest USA setting, and the US gets nuked. It's just how the town works together to deal with the various problems from there. (DO NOT BOTHER WITH SEASON 2)
Kolchak The Night Stalker (1974): Strong source of inspiration for The X-FIles. A reporter who likes digging into strange cases. Probably not as serious of a show as X-Files, and they had less of a budget, but damn good characters. And the actor who played Kolchak even had a little cameo in a later X-Files episode, Agua Mala (the one with the hurricane and people going missing).
Night Stalker: A modern remake, it also had a few fun episodes and I actually liked the characters.
Farscape: It's very frustrating that more people don't know about this one. IMDB puts it nicely, "Thrown into a distant part of the universe, an Earth astronaut finds himself part of a fugitive alien starship crew." Tons of fish-out-of-water comedy moments, plenty of serious stuff as the show goes on, and the character goes through a fantastic character development from bumbling to badass, all because of various experiences along the way. And it has a goddamn ending, so you won't get Firefly'd. And they weren't afraid to make much more alien aliens, not just some stupid bumps on the forehead. Depending on where you go and watch this, the order of episodes 2-6(ish) might be screwed up, so be careful. Also forgive episode 2 for looking visually bland and exactly like Earth, I'm pretty sure they blew a ton of their budget on the pilot and cut costs for that episode then.
